This involves the use of the problem species natural predator as a biological deterrent. In the case of Gulls & Corvids we would use the following species: Peregrine, Saker & Lanners. Gulls & Corvids although large will mob Harris Hawks. It is essential to utilise the correct species.

THE REASONS FOR CONTROLLING GULLS AT LANDFILL SITE IS MANIFOLD:

• Possible hazard to aircraft (13 kilometre is usually the criteria). Airports are very concerned during licensing applications/renewals with the local authorities that these hazards are not created.
• Health hazards as gull may act as vectors for transmissible diseases.
• The aesthetic visual impact of large flocks of gulls has a negative impact on the appearance of the site, especially if near urban areas.
• The dense flocking of the gulls on the working face causes problems of reduced visibility to the employees working machinery on the site.

VARIOUS TYPES OF MANAGEMENT NEED TO BE UTILISED TO COMBAT THE PROBLEMS,THESE BEING ACTIVE AND PASSIVE METHODS.
ACTIVE METHODS:

• The use of highly trained falcons.
• Bio-acoustic systems.
• Pyrotechnic devices (Firearms certificates are needed)
• Human presence.

PASSIVE METHODS:

• The covering of the working face with soil.
• The use of static kites
• The use of wires strung above the site.
